Ask a Vet with Dr. Sam: Why do cats chase their tails?

Like many kittens we take in, Piccolo had a rough start to life. She was found outside and alone at just four weeks old. She was a healthy little lady despite her circumstances and after lots of love in her foster home and the veterinary care all kittens receive when they land safely at MRFRS (flea treatment, dewormer, vaccines, a microchip and spay/neuter) she was adopted about a month ago. Her family sent us this update:

“My mom and I adopted Piccolo almost a month ago, we have since renamed her Willoughby, a.k.a. Willow, Bee and Fuzzy Face! She responds pretty well to all of them, but comes when we call for Willoughby. We can’t thank you enough for finding us such a perfect match. We didn’t expect to get literally every quality we asked for but somehow we did! We’d also like to send a ginormous thank you to her foster family; we could tell right away that she had been well loved and cared for.

As much as I’m sure she misses her foster family she has warmed right up to us (and her new dog!) in no time. She plays hard and naps harder. She is always in the same room as my mom, another animal, or myself. She loves to play with our dog, Maisy, almost as much as Maisy likes to play with her. When Maisy gets excited, she does something we call her “wigglebutts” where she wags her whole bum instead of her tail. Turns out, Willow does a similar move we call her “wigglebutt windup” where she crouches down and wiggles her bum before pouncing at a toy or Maisy’s paw/nose.

When she’s done playing she curls up with the dog or her favorite blanket, where she kneads her paws and purrs louder than our other two cats combined. Willow has taken quite the interest in our black and white cat, Lily, which is lucky because she has been much more tolerant of her new little sister than our other cat. She will allow Willow to nap on the dining chair beside her, not in the same chair or in her box (a cardboard box wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper with a cat bed in it that we leave on a chair in the dining room). Our other cat Sparky on the other hand still wants nothing to do with her, but we know she will come around. It took almost a year for her to warm up to Maisy. We are making sure she gets as much attention as possible though in the meantime, she will come out of hiding eventually! Thank you again for all you’ve done!”
