The Adoption Process

We are thrilled that you’re interested in giving a forever home to one (or more!) of our kitties! The goal of our adoption process is simple but important - to get to know each other and find a great match for you. We do not offer walk-in adoptions at the shelter - our adoptions are by appointment only.

To begin, please fill out an adoption matching questionnaire online. (All applicants must be 18 years of age or older.) If there is a particular cat or type of cat/kitten you're interested in, please make a note of that on your questionnaire.

An adoption counselor will review the form and let you know by phone or e-mail if we have any questions. If your application is approved, an adoption counselor will contact you to schedule your adoption appointment.

You can view our available cats online anytime. We look forward to working together to find your new feline friend!

All of our cats and kittens receive the following treatments before adoption*:

  • Vet exam

  • Spay/Neuter surgery

  • FVRCP (“distemper”) vaccination (at least one, sometimes multiple)

  • Rabies vaccination (kittens under 14 weeks may not be eligible for this)

  • Flea treatment

  • Dewormer

  • Home Again microchip with registration included

Since the MRFRS opened its first adoption center in 1993, we have adopted out over 24,000 cats and kittens into loving homes.

For every cat or kitten that we place, we are able to rescue another homeless kitty. All of our cats and kittens are spayed or neutered and microchipped before adoption. We have been supportive of pediatric spay/neuter since 1992 when we started rescuing kittens. If you are thinking of adopting a kitty from us, please consider adopting an older kitty or a formerly feral kitty. These adoptions represent only about 10% of our total adoptions and we are working hard to find more homes for these kitties.

*NOTE: All adopters will receive a health record stating what vaccines and treatment the cat has had. Additional treatments, such as FVRCP & rabies vaccinations, as well as additional deworming, are the responsibility of the adopter.
