Ask a Vet with Dr. Sam: Is it okay to give my cat some of my holiday dinner as a treat?

Dear MRFRS Family,

I am writing to you now with some very sad and difficult news. Yesterday afternoon I learned from Janet Rogers’s family that she passed away unexpectedly. Janet had been hospitalized several weeks ago but had been discharged and was recuperating at home so this news came as a shock to us all. I know that many of you knew Janet very well and you feel, as I do, the enormous loss to the MRFRS community and the loss of a good friend.

It is simply hard to imagine MRFRS without Janet. She was so many things to us and dedicated her time, home, heart, and assistance to MRFRS at every turn, without fail. As you read this, I am sure you can think of many instances where Janet was there if you needed anything, was a shoulder to lean on in difficult times, was an ear to listen to what was going on in your life, and the list goes on and on. She touched the lives of hundreds and hundreds of MRFRS volunteers and was a central role making sure the shelter ran without a hitch for many, many years.

Perhaps the legacy she most leaves behind is her willingness and dedication to caring for the old, sick, and injured cats that needed a home. She was always there for the most compromised, vulnerable cats when they needed her most and she loved each and every one of them with her whole heart. In that, she was a true role model for all of us.

Janet was living at home with 12 of her beloved cats, each of which is now either in or headed to a foster home where they will be safe, loved, and attended to—exactly what Janet would have wanted.

During this tumultuous time, it is difficult to know if/when there will be services but I will be sure to keep everyone posted about that. When it is safe to do so, I know that it will be important for us to come together and celebrate Janet’s life. I wish you all health and safety and welcome you now, and always, to reach out to me if you need anything.

All of my best,

Brit Fox Hover
