Ask a Vet: Could my cat be depressed?

The first time I saw Jack, he sauntered into my yard, said “hello” and went on to tell me how absolutely famished he was and that he could really use just a little something. Later I learned that he had his act down pat and used it throughout the neighborhood, convincing everyone that it had been hours, if not days, since he last had a healthy meal. Jack was a character and to his benefit, an incredibly friendly, loving soul. Because of his good nature and personality, I thought he deserved a loving home and family of his own, so I brought him to MRFRS for help.

Jack had other ideas and planned and executed his escape through a screen window – not once but twice! After the second disappearance, I searched for him everywhere and it was 6 months before I got word that someone had brought him in concerned with pending chilly weather (they had been feeding him all summer). Jack and I were once again reunited! After that adventure, although he went out exploring every day (and visited all his friends in the neighborhood who too had missed him), he always returned at night, curling up to cuddle or give head butts and purring up a storm. He spent more and more time inside keeping me company and enjoying the good life.

On Easter Sunday after about nine years, he headed out for his usual adventure and never returned. My heart still aches for my crazy little boy Jack, but I still feel so truly fortunate that of all the friends he made in town, it was me that he chose to share his life with.
