As temperatures rise and summer activities ramp up, it’s important to make sure our feline family members stay safe, comfortable, and stress-free all season long. Even indoor cats can face unexpected summertime dangers, from heat and unsafe foods to open doors and sudden escapes. A little extra preparation can go a long way in helping your cat enjoy a safe summer at home. Here are some ways to keep your kitties safe:
-
Keep doors and windows secure
Summer means more visitors, backyard gatherings, and kids running in and out: all of which can create opportunities for an indoor cat to slip outside unnoticed. Be mindful of open doors, unsecured window screens, and garage access points. -
Create a quiet retreat space
Some cats become overwhelmed by extra noise and activity during summer celebrations, fireworks, or family visits. Set up a calm, comfortable room where your cat can relax with food, water, toys, and a cozy hiding spot away from the commotion, this can also help if your guests will be frequently opening and closing your doors! -
Make sure your cat is microchipped
Even indoor-only cats can escape unexpectedly. A microchip greatly increases the chances of being reunited if your cat gets lost. If your cat already has a microchip, summer is the perfect time to double-check that your contact information is current and up to date. Still looking to get your beloved cat or dog microchipped? Be cautious with summer plants and chemicals
Fertilizers, citronella products, pesticides, and even many flowers can be toxic to cats (to learn more about which plants check out our blog post). Keep harmful products safely stored and research any plants before bringing them into your home or garden. -
Never leave pets in vehicles or enclosed spaces
Temperatures inside cars, sunrooms, enclosed porches, or even your home can rise dangerously fast, even on mild days. Cats should always remain in cool, well-ventilated indoor environments.
With a little extra care and awareness, summer can be a safe, happy season filled with sunny naps, playtime, and plenty of purrs.
