A Flood of Generosity

For cats in need of expensive veterinary care, Christmas future may not come without your help. One cat whose future would not have been full of cheer is Sage.

Sage came to us as a stray kitten with his brother.  When they arrived, they both had terrible diarrhea, which can be especially dangerous for young cats. We worked to deworm them and the boys improved. The boys were in love with each other and so were adopted together. It would have been wonderful if this were the end of their story but sadly Sage developed consistent diarrhea.

It was difficult for him to make it to the litter box and he’d often miss. His new owner was understandably concerned brought him to the vet and they suspected a colonic stricture. The scope of diagnostics and surgical care was beyond what his owner was prepared for so she reluctantly returned Sage to MRFRS.

MRFRS brought Sage to the Animal Ultrasound Clinic in Salem where they performed an ultrasound, endoscopy, and biopsy of what was blocking his colon. They too suspect a stricture.

He had a surgical consult with Dr. Casale at Angell Memorial Hospital on Dec. 5th to discuss options to correct his issues. For the time being, he takes lots of medication that keeps his stool soft so it can more easily pass through the narrowing in his colon. He is more comfortable than before but he will need surgery to alleviate the pressure the stricture causes. The diagnostic procedures were close to $800 and his surgery will likely cost several thousand more.

Sage has been through a lot and misses his brother, but he’s remained a loving, snuggly kitty and is really only a kitten; he’s approximately 6 to 7 months old.

We know you’d agree Sage does not deserve to have his young life cut short. He deserves a chance to find a forever home to love him and to be relieved of his painful digestive issues. Luckily, because MRFRS believes in compassion and we don’t euthanize kitties with health issues. Sage will get the care he needs to become a healthy, adoptable cat. This humane approach to animal care is only possible because of big-hearted donations from caring supporters and your help is needed more than ever.

This is a time of year that should be joyous for all, not just the lucky. Please make a donation to MRFRS during our yearend campaign. Your generosity will help cats like Sage survive and have many bright Christmases awaiting him, and his future family.
