If you’ve attended MRFRS’s Fur Ball Gala in the last few years, then you likely had the opportunity to meet the most special guest of all – Toto the Tornado Kitten! Toto and his dad Jonathan were a favorite fixture at the annual gala, as this kitty charmed everyone he met with his sweet personality and amazing story. Jonathan traditionally donated a visit with Toto as a Fur Ball auction item, and it was always one of the popular items people bid on, helping to raise even more funds at the gala.
Sadly, Toto passed away this December and while the entire MRFRS team is heartbroken over the loss of this exceptional cat, we wanted to share the incredibly positive impact for shelter animals made by Toto and his Dad.
Toto’s Story
When a little kitten was found blown into a tree following the devastating tornado that struck the Town of Brimfield, Massachusetts nobody could predict the impact his story would have on so many people and even other furry friends.
Toto was only six days old when a tree worker found him amid some tornado damaged trees having been blown there by the storm and brought him to the Brimfield Fire Station. Local paramedic Jonathan Hall was there working as part of the emergency response effort and was able to keep Toto alive until help arrived. The tiny kitten was turned over to the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s rescue services team and was nursed back to health with bottle feedings and 24-hour care. When it came time for a healthy Toto to leave the shelter, a new home was found for him back in Brimfield where his journey began, living with rescuer Jonathan and his wife Amy.
Toto’s Impact
Jonathan decided to write two children’s books about Toto’s adventures, which were quite successful selling over 12,000 copies, with 100% of the proceeds going to animal welfare organizations, including MRFRS. To promote the book Jonathan and Toto traveled to 500+ schools, nursing homes, and libraries over the years, telling Toto’s story and raising funds and food donations. Sales of the books have raised almost $75,000 and Toto’s appearances brought in over 4,000 pounds in food donations!
Toto’s gentle and kind nature was always on display, and he loved giving out nose nuzzles and being petted by fans both old and young. The impact that Toto and Jonathan have had in raising funds and awareness for animal rescue organizations has literally made a difference in the lives of thousands of animals. MRFRS is deeply saddened by the loss of Toto, but we are honored to have known him and we are grateful to have been a small part of his incredible journey to create positive change in the world.
