This is Caleb. The picture on the left of the cover was taken shortly after he was found in a trash can after someone had discarded him like a piece of garbage. No one knows how long he was in the trash can before being found, but when he was found he was skin and bones, dehydrated and near death. Even his eye sockets were sunken due to the depletion of calcium. The Vet who examined him said the marks on his face were probably from him trying to use every part of his body to escape from the trash can. She also estimated him to be between ten and fifteen years old. She said he had little to no hope of surviving.
However…Caleb was rescued and brought to a cat sanctuary in Pennsylvania. At first, he was too weak to stand. He would eat a small amount of food, but it took so much out of him that he would have to lay down after. Caleb proved to be a fighter. He continued to get stronger every day. He was determined and the woman at the sanctuary who took him in, fought right alongside with him. Caleb soon put on weight, and was able to walk around just fine and the photo on the right of the calendar cover shows how handsome he became. Caleb even mastered the art of jumping up onto a warm lap for head scratches and lots of love!
In his new life, Caleb had as much food as he could ever want, as many toys as he could want, and he was surrounded by dozens of other cats who just loved him. In the later stage of his life, he finally found love and home to call his own. He was such a strong boy to have come so far, and he didn’t hold a grudge for what happened to him in the trash can.
Caleb may not have been the cutest or best-looking kitty, but he was the absolute sweetest and with a heart of gold. He enjoyed living the good life, surrounded by love. He was truly a special boy.
MRFRS is proud to have Caleb as our 2024 Calendar Cover Cat. Even though he sadly passed away this past Spring, his wonderful story is motivating many people to purchase this year’s calendar. The proceeds from the MRFRS calendar are used to help cats in need, so each purchase is a way to help “pay it forward” in memory of Caleb and cats like him.
