‘Tis the season for planting seeds! Itching to get your garden started? Why not try an indoor cat garden too!
You’ve probably heard that some houseplants are toxic to cats. Both PetMD and the ASPCA provide details on plants to watch out for.
But, what if your cat has a tendency to graze on your house plants? How can you create a safe way for your cat to enjoy a little greenery? Create a cat garden!
Pick a planter that is small enough that your cat won’t be tempted to use it as a litter box and tall enough for your cat to snack comfortably. Fill it with healthy soil.
Choosing cat-safe plants is essential. You want to include enough variety to make it interesting for the cat, but not too overwhelming. Three to four plants is a good number.
Catnip, Cat thyme, and Valerian have scents that are attractive to cats and can have energizing or mellowing effects. Catnip should be avoided for cats with a history of seizures.
Wheat, rye, and oat grass have lots of nutrients including vitamins and minerals. Even though your cat will nibble on the grass, it’s best to trim back at least one inch every other week.
Once you’ve put it all together, place the planter in an easily accessible location where it is securely balanced and not in danger of being knocked over. Introduce your cat to their new garden and remember to keep it watered for many years of enjoyable snacking.
