Every cat owner wants to spend many years with their furry friend and one simple way to increase your cat’s longevity is spay/neuter!
A 2013 study conducted by Banfield Pet Hospitals on a database of 460,000 cats concluded that spayed female cats lived 39% longer and neutered male cats lived 62% longer.
One of the key reasons for the increased longevity of altered cats are their reduced risk of certain types of cancers. Intact female cats have a greater chance of developing pyometra (a potentially fatal uterine infection) and uterine, mammary gland and other cancers of the reproductive system. Neutering male pets eliminates their risk of testicular cancer and eliminates the possibility of developing benign prostatic hyperplasia which can affect the ability to defecate.
Another reason why altered cats live longer than their unaltered peers, is that their urge to roam is significantly decreased. Roaming exposes cats to fights with other animals, resulting in injuries and infections, and increases the risk of possibly being hit by a car or other accidents.
Remember to spay/neuter your kittens and cats to help them live longer, healthier lives so you can spend as much time together as possible!
