The Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society’s
Mentoring Program for Free-Roaming Cats
One of MRFRS’s most innovative initiatives is the mentoring of animal welfare organizations around the U.S. who are seeking to grow and fund their free-roaming cat spay/neuter programs.
The original MRFRS mentoring program, supported by PetSmart Charities, ran from 2012-2015, and assisted over 50 organizations in launching pilot Trap/Neuter/ Return programs and obtaining grants for additional work from PetSmart Charities. More than 9,350 cats in 15 states were assisted during this phase of the program.
For 2015-2016, the program has shifted focus to a “primer grant program” for grass-roots feline welfare organizations with a budget of $60,000 or less. Groups accepted to the program were required to complete a new fundraiser, with funds raised (up to $1000 per group) matched by MRFRS, thanks to a grant from the Red Acre Foundation. Eleven groups in seven states participated in this program, all reached their fundraising goal, and the dollars raised will result in over 900 cats being spayed/neutered.
Twelve groups have been selected to participate in the Primer Grant Program for 2016. If you would like to be put on a list to be kept up to date on mentoring opportunities as they become available, please email please email Stacy LeBaron at email@example.com.
