Fur Ball Gala Tickets are on Sale!

We’d love for you to party, enjoy a seated dinner, bid, and raise money for cats with us at the 23rd Annual MRFRS Fur Ball Gala! We’re celebrating our founding 25 years ago with our biggest auction yet! Tickets are on sale now. The deadline for ticket sales is Monday, October 23rd – and no tickets are available at the door this year due to the meal being served – so get yours today!

The MRFRS Fur Ball is right around the corner!

As summer winds down, it’s time to get ready for the 24th Annual MRFRS Fur Ball and Gala! Mark this date on your calendars: Saturday, November 10, 2018 at the Andover Country Club, 60 Canterbury Street, Andover.

Our theme for this year’s Fur Ball is, “Tails with Tales.” While we know every cat (or most of them!) has a “tail,” every cat that MRFRS assists through your generosity has a “tale:” an emotional story about how it receives the love, care and support it richly deserves. We’ll be sharing some of these “tales” during our Fur Ball program.

If you’re a Fur Ball veteran, you know how much fun it is to gather with fellow cat lovers to celebrate MRFRS’ work and raise funds for cats in need. If you’ve never attended, here’s what you’re missing:

  • Our fabulous host, Randy Price, and the opportunity to be included in the WCVB Channel 5 Eyeopener News “Wake Up Call”
  • Hundreds of live and silent auction items for all tastes in all price ranges
  • Cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a delicious dinner and ice cream bar!
  • Music, raffles and more!

We’ll be selling only 200 tickets this year, so you’ll want to get yours early. Ticket sales start on October 10, and our online auction starts on October 19. All of the money raised by the Fur Ball will make the world a happier, healthier place for cats.

Lots more information about the Fur Ball will be available in future editions of the Monday Mews. We want to see YOU at the 2018 Fur Ball!

Strut for Strays FAQ

We’re excited that many of you will be joining us at the Strut for Strays! It’s going to be a fun day for feline fans and everyone at MRFRS is grateful for the funds you’ve raised — especially the cats and kittens! We’ve received quite a few questions about the day’s events so we’ve prepared an FAQ to help you prepare to strut your stuff!
If you find your question hasn’t been answered please email gail@mrfrs.org.

What time is registration?

Registration starts at 11:15 a.m. at the Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm. The walk starts promptly at 12:00 so make sure you allow enough time to check in.

Does everyone register in the same place?

There will be only one registration area but there will be two different tables. One table will be for those walkers who registered and raised money on line.  A second table will be for those who did not register on line and who have a paper registration with cash or checks.

Where can I find a paper registration form?

If you have raised money the old-fashioned way by collecting checks or cash, you can find a registration form online at mrfrs.org. Please print the form off and insert the names of your donors and the amount they donated. Please put the checks/cash/registration form into an envelope with your name on the front. That will greatly help the volunteers at the registration desk. There will be a small supply of paper registration forms at the registration desk but if possible, please prepare your form before getting into line.

If I registered online and do not have any checks or cash to turn in, what can I expect at registration?

The registration desk will have the names of all individuals who registered online with First Giving.
After giving your name to the person at registration s/he will check off your name and verify the amount you have raised so you know if you qualify for a t-shirt or a hoodie. (see below).
You will be given a registration wristband which will qualify you for pizza, cake & soft drinks after the walk.

If I registered on line but also have checks/cash to turn into MRFRS, what can I expect at registration?

The registration desk will have the names of all individuals who registered online with First Giving.
If you have cash/check donations, please complete the paper registration form listing the donors and the amount of their donations PRIOR to going to the registration desk. You can obtain a paper registration form at mrfrs.org or pick one up at the registration desk prior to getting in line.
After giving your name to the person at registration s/he will check off your name and verify the total amount you have raised including on line donations and your cash/check donations so you know if you qualify for a t-shirt or a hoodie. (see below).
You will be given a registration wristband which will qualify you for pizza, cake & soft drinks after the walk.

Where will I receive my t-shirt or hoodie?

If you qualify for a t-shirt or hoodie (see below for qualifications) and you registered prior to the date t-shirts/hoodies were ordered, May 19th, a t-shirt/hoodie will be waiting for you at the registration desk. If you qualified and/or registered after May 19th, be sure to fill out an order form and your t-shirt/hoodie will be ordered for you after the Strut.

How do I qualify for a 2018 Strut for Strays t-shirt?

If you are a fundraiser and have raised $50 or more, you will qualify for a 2018 Strut for Strays Walk t-shirt. You can donate $50 to yourself or raise the money from family/friend donations. It doesn’t matter if it is raised on line or in person. When you check-in at the Strut Registration desk on June 3rd, if you have raised $50 or more, you qualify for a t-shirt.

How do I qualify for a 2018 Strut for Strays hoodie?

If you are a fundraiser and have raised $250 or more, you qualify for a 2018 Strut for Strays Walk hoodie. You can donate the $250 to yourself or raise the money from family/friend donations. It doesn’t matter if it is raised on line or in person. When you check-in at the Strut Registration desk on June 3rdr, if you have raised $250 or more, you qualify for a 2018 hoodie.

Can I purchase the 2018 Strut for Strays t-shirt or hoodie?

To receive a t-shirt you must be a fundraiser and have a donation of at least $50. To receive a hoodie, you must be a fundraiser and have donations of $250 or more. You can make the donation to yourself if you wish to do so.

How do I receive a t-shirt/hoodie if I did not register & qualify prior to May 19th?

When you go to the registration desk, if there is no t-shirt or hoodie waiting for you, the person checking you in will verify that they have your size (applies if you registered online) and if not, you will be asked to complete a form giving us your information. On that form you can designate if you want to pick the item up at the shelter or at the Main Street office. If you wish to have the item mailed to you, that can be arranged but there may be an additional cost.

What distance is the walk?

The walk is approximately 2.8 miles long.

Where is the walk?

The walk starts and ends at the Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm and will then meander 2.8 miles through parts of Newbury and Newburyport. There are sidewalks available for most of the walk although some of the sidewalks are “traditional New England walkways” so they are uneven due to frost heaves. The route does not have any “hills” but does have some knolls. There will be some crossing of streets but MRFRS will have attendants available and there will be signage pointing the way!

Will I need to bring water for the walk?

MRFRS will have complimentary water available at the starting line for any walker who would like a bottle of water for the walk. Note: Please return the bottle to the farm as we will be recycling. There will be a recycling container beside the table where you initially received the water bottle.

At the end of the walk, what can I expect?

Upon arriving back at the Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm, all fundraisers will be greeted with pizza right out of the Flatbread’s mobile oven. There will also be cake and soft drinks available for you. To be eligible you must have a wrist bracelet.
The mobile oven cooks between six and eight pizzas at a time so you may have to wait in line for a little bit but you will then be handed pizza HOT out of the oven and the wait will be well worth it! We anticipate the walkers will return on a staggered basis so the wait should not be long.

What kind of pizza will be available?

There will be two kinds of vegetarian pizzas available as well as a pepperoni/mushroom pizza. We will also have a small number of gluten-free pizzas. There will a limited number of vegan and gluten-free pizzas available. Please be sure to specify if you wish gluten-free/vegan as they will be cooked only on order. Please be understanding that you may have to wait a little longer for the special order and there are limited specialty pizzas available.
Pizza, soft drinks and cake will be available for those with wristbands. If you do not have a wrist band, you will be asked to go to the registration desk to obtain one.

Will I be able to purchase pizza if I did not fundraise for the Strut for Strays?

At the registration desk you will be able to obtain a wristband enabling you to have pizza, a soft drink and cake for a donation of $10. No credit cards can be accepted so please bring cash. There is no charge for children 13 years or younger.

Will there be other types of food available?

Unlike prior years when there were food trucks where walkers and guests had to purchase food options, this year’s Strut for Strays committee decided to thank our fundraisers by offering free pizza and cake to all who raised funds for MRFRS. There will not be other food or drink options available.

Will tables & chairs be available?

There will be seating for approximately 60 people on the lawn under the large trees surrounding the farm house. There will also be a few picnic blankets spread on the lawn. If you wish to bring your own chair or blanket you are welcome to do so but there should be enough seating for walkers who wish to sit at a table.

Will there be alcoholic beverages available for purchase?

There will be no alcoholic beverages available at this year’s Strut for Strays.

Will there be a raffle this year?

The Captain Courageous Fund will host a raffle. Tickets are $5 each for a chance to win a lovely plant covered with lottery tickets. Be sure to stop by the CCF table to buy your raffle ticket. They will also be selling cat grass. Homemade baked goods will be available for a donation.

Will there be recycling?

There will be containers scattered around the eating area. There will be containers for water bottles and separate containers for soda cans & bottles. Trash receptacles will also be available for paper plates, napkins and utensils. We appreciate your help in separating the items so that volunteers will be able to dispose of the waste appropriately.

Petfinder Foundation grant will help FeLV+ kitties find forever homes!

We are thrilled to announce we’ve been given a $2000 grant from The Petfinder.com Foundation. The adoption staff always works hard to help the feline leukemia positive (FeLV+) cats who make their way to MRFRS find loving homes.

These cats are often overlooked by potential adopters because they may need a little extra TLC as they grow older and, because FeLV can be transmitted to other cats through mutual grooming, these special cats need to live alone or with other FeLV+ cats. It can take a little extra time, but eventually, the purrfect person walks through the door, falls in love, and gives an FeLV+ cat or two a place to call home.

Congratulations to Stormy and Summer! They are the first two FeLV+ kitties placed with the help of The Petsmart.com Foundation grant!

The “New Year, New Home” Grant awarded to MRFRS will give our staff the opportunity to shine a spotlight on MRFRS’s FeLV+ population by reducing adoption fees for these friendly felines and give cats of all stripes and statuses  the best possible chance to live happily ever after. Take moment to check out the press release below, learn more about The Petfinder.com Foundation, and if you’re interested in meeting our FeLV+ felines, call our adoption counselors at 978-462-0760 or drop by for a purr and a pet during adoption hours.
